Z@PPmixer

In 2009 one of our frequent partners Driebit was asked to rebuild a previous project of theirs: the Z@PPmixer. De Monsters were asked to help with the production. The Z@PPmixer is an online video editing application for children. Within the application kids can upload and record video and audio, animate still images and mix them altogether to create their own short video clips. These can all be viewed in a custom built player and the best clips even make it onto national Dutch television.

The Interaction Design and Visual Design was done by the client.

Within the mixer, kids put their final video together, placing images, audio and video that they created in other parts of the application on a timeline. There is a separate track for images, video's and audio. Adding new content to the mix is really easy. Just drag and drop an item from the library on the track and it is part of the video. You can set the duration of each item by dragging the start or the end point of it. Images can last as long as you want whereas audio and video are of course limited by their original length. Since the created video's are not rendered, a special video player had to be created that actually merges all the different tracks together as if the video was rendered. Video, animations and audio are loaded in real-time and laid over each other in the custom player. When you are done with your video you can save it after which it is checked by the editors of Z@PP before it is put online.
